A former staff at X, formerly Twitter, won a court order in Ireland against the social network after it was found that they were wrongfully terminated from the job. Ireland’s Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) ruled that Gary Rooney, a former senior executive was to be paid €550,000 (~RM2.66 million), or around US$600,000.
To provide some background, back in 2022, Elon Musk, the current owner of X, sent out an email with the title “A Fork in the Road”. The body of the email told staff that they should expect work under his management to be “extremely hardcore” and that it would include “long hours of high intensity”. At the end of the email, Musk gave them 24 hours to decide if they wished to remain as part of the new Twitter, and that they would need to click the provided link, which is the “Yes” in this story, or don’t and get three months severance pay. Rooney didn’t click it, and was therefore terminated as part of Musk’s plan.
The WRC ruled that Musk’s 24-hour deadline wasn’t fair, citing that he basically gave no “reasonable notice” for his staff to make a sound decision. In contrast, Rooney had been at Twitter for nine years, so 24 hours to make a snap decision clearly isn’t fair.
Suffice it to say, Rooney is far from the only individual taking X that is throwing the book at X. Back in March, a former SpaceX employee filed a lawsuit against the rocketship company, claiming that they were a victim of gender discrimination and unwanted sexual advances.
