Google Maps for Wear OS is now rolling out a new offline feature that was announced alongside the Pixel Watch 3. According to 9to5Google, this rollout was discovered via version 11.140.0701.W of Google Maps for Wear OS on the Pixel Watch 2. After updating, users will find “Offline maps” appearing above Settings in the app’s main list.
The watch app automatically downloads a map for the user’s area and syncs any offline areas already on their phone. It also shows how much space these maps take up and allows users to delete them with a tap. According to Google, maps will automatically sync when the device is on Wi-Fi and charging, aside from the initial download.
In the map view, a slashed cloud icon next to the time indicates when the user is offline. This update complements the new “Search & Go” Tile, which features Home and Work shortcuts and a microphone for voice input. Users can also tap “Map” to jump directly into the map view, bypassing the main feed.
The offline maps feature will be introduced first on the newly launched Pixel Watch 3. After the Pixel wearables, other Wear OS supported devices such as Samsung’s recent Galaxy Watch series are also expected to receive this update, though the timing has not been disclosed at this time.
