It is being suggested that AMD is considering upping the maximum TDP of its recently launched Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X, from 65W to a whopping 105W. The alleged update to the boost in power consumption will be done via the upcoming AGESA 1.2.0.1A Patch A, which will be downloadable via each motherboard vendor and partner to the chipmaker.
The suggestion comes by way of X, formerly Twitter, from the prominent leakster and rumour monger, nchi11eddog. This runs parallel to the initial rumour that AMD was planning on raising the default power limit, but instead 105W, it was supposed to be 120W. At this stage, if chi11eddog’s sources are reliable, it is looking to be lower than usual.

While the increase in their power consumption would certain be a boon for overclockers, we’re not sure why AMD is doing this. As we found with our review of the Ryzen 7 9700X, the Zen5-powered CPU performed about the same as its predecessor, the 7700X, but nearly half the power consumption, while generating significantly less heat.
At the time of writing, AMD hasn’t yet confirmed the AGESA update but we’ll be keeping an eye out for any updates.
