Four major mobile network operators (MNOs) have officially submitted their tenders to the government for the development of a second wholesale 5G network. Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil has revealed that the operators in question are CelcomDigi Bhd, Maxis Bhd, UMobile, and Telekom Malaysia Bhd.
The minister noted that four out of the five MNOs, excluding YTL Communications Sdn Bhd, had previously signed a share subscription agreement with Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) on 1 December 2023. He emphasised that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will decide on which provider will develop Malaysia’s second 5G network, and he will not interfere.
“When the decision is made, it will be based on the tenders that have been submitted,” he told reporters at the sidelines of the Huawei Malaysia Supplier Ecosystem Convention 2024. “May the best company and supplier win.”
Fahmi said he is expecting a decision soon, with hopes that the process will be finalised and announced within the year. For now, MCMC has yet to provide him with any updates, he added.
