It is confirmed during the Pixel 9 series local launch earlier today that Google’s current-generation foldable, the Pixel Fold 9 Fold, will not be coming to Malaysia this year. According to a representative, the country initially wasn’t included in the company’s target market when the device entered production, so there wasn’t enough to be allocated.
This revelation will surely disappoint many, but Google assures that a first-party foldable smartphone will see an official release for the local market eventually. However, don’t expect that to happen anytime soon, as the company promises that it will instead introduce the successor to the Pixel 9 Pro Fold in Malaysia. In other words, we’ll only get one next year.
In case you missed it, Google introduced the high-end variant of its Pixel Fold smartphone last night. It features a 6.3-inch external display, while flipping it open reveals a larger 8-inch screen. Interestingly, Google claims that the Pixel 9 Pro Fold has a comparable thickness to the Pixel 9 Pro in its folded form. Other notable features include Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and Ultra Thin Glass protection for the external and internal displays respectively, multi-alloy steel hinge, IPX8 water resistance, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and stereo speakers.
Like the company’s other smartphones launched last night, the foldable is also equipped with a Tensor G4 chipset, along with 16GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage. It has a 4,650mAh battery with 45W fast charging support via USB-C, and supports wireless charging via compatible Qi devices. Other than that, the phone also comes with Android 14, as well as WiFi 7, Bluetooth 5.3 and NFC connectivity.
Imaging-wise, on the back is a triple camera setup comprising a 48MP primary, 10.5MP ultra-wide, and a 10.8MP telephoto with 5x zoom. Meanwhile, housed within the cutout on its external and internal displays is a 10MP selfie camera.
The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold launched with a starting price of US$1,799 (~RM8,006) for the 256GB configuration. It is slated to go on sale in the US, Japan, and Europe in September this year.
