In addition to the Pixel 9, Pro and Pro XL, the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold was also unveiled. What makes it interesting though is that, when folded, it shares the 6.3-inch screen size with the other models, minus the XL, of course. The internet search giant also claims that the foldable has a “comparable thickness” to the 9 Pro when folded.
While it can feel and function like an ordinary phone when used this way, the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold also has its 8-inch Super Actua Flex inner display. The company also claims that this is the “largest display on a phone”. Like the rest of the Pixel 9 series, the foldable also runs the Tensor G4 chipset, but it also gets 16GB of RAM to power “features that are just for foldables”. Among them are the usual split screen multitasking, so no surprises so far.
What’s truly new, and probably something that will be appreciated most by parents with very young kids, is what the company calls Made You Look. The gist of it is to have something being shown on the outer screen to make a baby look at it, and preferably smile, allowing parents to take that shot that can prove quite elusive. It’s also a feature that I imagine would not be too difficult to replicate for other foldable phone makers.
Also, what looks exclusive to the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, are manual camera controls. Granted, the Pixel line has always had very good point-and-shoot results, and never really needed manual controls. But at the same time, it’s odd that when it is finally added, only one model in the range gets it, and it’s far from something that only a foldable can do.
The internet search giant has not listed the camera setup of the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold on its own official pages at the time of writing. But reports are noting that its main camera setup consists of a 48MP main + 10.5MP wide-angle + 10.8MP 5x telephoto combo. It front-facing shooters, for both the main and secondary displays, are a 10MP shooter.
Wrapping it all up, the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold has an asking price of US$1,799 (~RM8,006). Like the rest of the range, it is available for pre-order in the US, Japan and Europe, but it will start shipping in said markets in September. No word on local pricing and availability, and it doesn’t appear to be joining the other models for a local launch.
