Maybank has recently announced the integration of a new malware shielding feature to its MAE mobile application. This is in line with last week’s announcement by the Association of Banks in Malaysia (ABM) and the Association of Islamic Banks in Malaysia (AIBIM) regarding the implementation of the security measure by all banks listed under both organisations.
According to Maybank, the new feature will automatically scan for any malware or risky permission settings upon launching MAE, and will display warnings and obstacles on the device when opened if there is any application in the form of malicious software or malware. The warning display will also list the applications involved, and the user will need to remove the related applications before being able to continue using the banking app.
In addition, MAE will warn the user if Developer Mode or Accessibility Mode are activated. Reason being, as stated by the bank on its security enhancement page, is that the two features could potentially place both the app and your account(s) at risk from external attacks. Maybank also urges customers to not download its app or any APK file from unofficial sources in order to avoid potential malware onto your device.
The new malware shielding feature is gradually being rolled out to all MAE users, so be sure to keep the app updated in order to receive this enhanced security measure. Keep in mind that the update will not arrive on Maybank’s older Maybank2u app, which is scheduled to be shut down come 28 August 2024.
