Chinese leakster Digital Chat Station has claimed previously that Huawei will be the first phone maker to release a tri-folding phone, having claimed to have seen a prototype of the thing. Now, it looks like a similar prototype may have been seen in the real world, but not exactly in the wild.
An image of one such tri-folding device has been spotted in the hands of Richard Yu, who was previously the CEO of Huawei, and currently the company’s chairman of its board of directors for the consumer business group. While the leakster does chime in, saying that it looks similar to the prototype that they’ve claimed to have seen, the image was posted by someone else on Weibo.
Details are not the greatest, but from what can be seen, it is indeed pretty massive, maybe a bit too large for the previously claimed 10-inch unfolded screen. The reflections on this supposed Huawei tri-folding device shows two creases, which would fit the form factor. The left-most piece in the configuration also comes with a punch-hole cutout for the front facing camera.
The leakster also claims that the tri-folding device will come with a Kirin 9-series chip, and that it would be launched before the Huawei Mate 70. For context, GSMArena claims that the latter is currently rumours to launch in its home market within the fourth quarter of the year.
