OpenAI is allowing ChatGPT free tier users to finally access and try out its DALL-E 3 image generation tool, but only for a very limited amount. As per the company‘s announcement on X (formerly Twitter), you can now ask the chat bot to create up to two AI generated images per day.
To utilise the DALL-E tool, all you have to do is come up with a prompt, describing the image that you wish to generate. ChatGPT will then provide you with a result after a brief moment of processing, along with a short description. Do note that generated images lack any visual watermarks, and are saved in a webp format when you download them to your device.
We’re rolling out the ability for ChatGPT Free users to create up to two images per day with DALL·E 3.

Previously, the DALL-E tool was exclusively offered to the paid ChatGPT Plus tier. Unlike the free version, subscribers are provided with a more generous image generation limit, though the arrangement is done differently – five images per minute on DALL-E 2 or one per minute on DALL-E 3, according to OpenAI’s website.

Granted, the two per day cap is somewhat atrocious, but this is likely by design. Like many other “free” services elsewhere, the limited usage often serves as a small taste of what the premium tiers offer. In other words, if you like it, then subscribe to ChatGPT Plus.
