Tesla has reportedly scrapped all plans to erect manufacturing plants for its Electric Vehicles (EV) in Malaysia. According to a report by Thai outlet The Nation, the decision also affects Indonesia and Thailand, and anywhere else except for China, America, and Germany.
“Tesla is currently only discussing charging stations, with the factory plans suspended not just in Thailand but worldwide. They are not proceeding in Malaysia, Indonesia, or anywhere else except for China, America, and Germany,” said the source who spoke to The Nation. In addition, the team of executives responsible for leading the push into Southeast Asia has since been disbanded.
The news is rather surprising, considering that it was only a year ago that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government announced that Tesla and SpaceX, would be bringing “large-scale investments” into the country, and therefore create tens of thousands of jobs for the country, and to mark the occasion, the company officially launched the Model Y for the Malaysian market. Not only that, it also opened up a Centre in Cyberjaya.
