Apple TV’s upcoming tvOS 18 update will allow users to share external links to nearby iOS devices. According to Apple TV enthusiast Sigmund Judge on Threads, this new ability was discovered in the firmware’s latest beta build for developers.
Despite all of Apple TV’s capabilities, the current tvOS software itself still lacks web browser support, including Safari, meaning that users still can’t easily share content directly. Based on the latest beta, Apple has added a new workaround to address this shortcoming.
As shared by Judge, tvOS 18 features a new button that’s been added to the Immersive Videos description, which lets users access more information about the Apple Vision Pro. Instead of opening a webpage directly on the Apple TV, clicking on the button will sends the link directly via AirDrop to the user’s iPhone or iPad. Judge adds that the update could also potentially integrate abilities to distribute related media such as books, soundtracks, and AR experiences to devices such as the iPhone and the iPad.
Meanwhile, tvOS 18 is set to introduce a new feature called InSight, which shows information about actors, characters and even songs playing in an Apple TV+ movie or show. Additionally, other upcoming updates include Smart Subtitles, support for a 21:9 aspect ratio, a revamped Apple Fitness+ app, Live Captions for FaceTime, new screen savers, and more.
At the moment, this is still in its beta preview for developers, and the update may only be compatible with Apple TV’s latest models from 2015. But we can expect a final version of the OS this coming fall, with a public beta set to release later this month.
