Huawei has recently launched its latest clamshell foldable smartphone in China, now released under its Nova product line. Officially known as the nova Flip, the new device is a significant upgrade over its predecessor, most notably with its new design which features a larger, square-shaped external display.
The Huawei nova Flip measures at 169.8 x 75.4 x 6.9 mm in its folded form and 87.6 x 75.4 x 15.1 mm when unfolded, which makes it slightly larger than its closest rival, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6. It features a waterdrop hinge mechanism that’s rated at 1.2 million bends by SGS Switzerland. Weight-wise, Huawei says the device comes in at 195 grams.
In its folded form, the new compact foldable offers a square 2.14-inch OLED cover display with 480 x 480 pixel resolution and 120Hz refresh rate that’s situated beside its vertically arranged dual camera setup. The latter comprises a 50MP primary shooter that’s paired together with an 8MP ultra-wide lens.
Flipping the device open, we’re greeted with a 6.94-inch LTPO OLED screen with FHD+ (1136 x 2690 pixels) resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. Also onboard are dual loudspeakers, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and a USB-C 2.0 port for charging as well as data transfer.
Under the hood, the nova Flip is equipped with an undisclosed octa-core chipset that’s believed to be a Kirin 8000. Huawei did not reveal how much RAM is offered, but it is revealed that the phone comes with up to 1TB of storage. Meanwhile, powering it is a 4,400mAh battery with 66W wired fast charging and 5W reverse charging.
On the software side, the new compact foldable runs on Huawei’s HarmonyOS 4.2 platform, which also includes AI-powered image editing tools such as subject removal, text selection from images, and even image generation. The cover display, on the other hand, is capable of running some first-party apps like weather, music, calendar, and others.
In China, the Huawei nova Flip starts from CNY5,288 (~RM3,305) for the 256GB configuration, CNY5,688 (~RM3,555) for the 512GB, and CNY6,488 (~RM4,055) for the 1TB. It is slated to go on sale on 10 August, available in four colourways: New Green, Sakura Pink, Zero White, and Starry Black. There’s no word on an international release just yet.
