Apple is reportedly preparing a new version of the Apple Watch SE, potentially incorporating a “rigid plastic” design for it. This update, anticipated to be unveiled alongside the new iPhone 16 lineup, aims to make the watch more affordable and, somewhat, more appealing to younger users. The shift to using plastic materials could enable the company to diversify how the new modules would look, contrasting with the current and more subdued palette of the existing Apple Watch.
The Watch SE has been part of Apple’s strategy to offer a more budget-friendly option without sacrificing too much of the core functionality. The original model, launched in 2020, provided a similar display and casing as the Series 6 but lacked certain features like an Always-On Display and ECG support. Meanwhile, the 2022 remodel upgraded the processor to match the Series 8 and used a nylon composite back, but still did not include the latest health features.
According to Mark Gurman’s recent report, the next Watch SE model may feature a new rigid plastic body that is expected to reduce manufacturing costs. This change could lead to a broader range of colour options, making the watch more appealing to a younger audience who may prefer more vibrant designs.
With the anticipated update, Apple could either maintain the Watch SE’s current price of US $249 (~RM1,097) while adding new features such as ECG support or an Always-On Display, or potentially making it more affordable by keeping the existing features. As always, don’t get your hopes up just yet, as this particular rumour has yet to be proven accurate.
