Google is now rolling out two new features called “Call Casting” and “Internet Sharing.” This is part of Google’s new “Cross-device services” initiative, which aims to streamline user experience when switching between different Android devices.
According to 9to5Google, Call Casting allows users to move video calls from one device to another as long as both devices are logged into the same Google Account. For instance, if you’re using a video calling app like Google Meet, you can cast the call to a nearby device, which in turn, will display a list of available devices for casting. This feature is currently available exclusively with Google Meet, and users can activate it by selecting the Cast button, which looks almost similar to the Chromecast icon.
The Internet Sharing feature, however, enables automatic sharing of internet hotspot access with other devices. It’s compatible with Chromebooks and Android devices that are signed into the same Google Account and it can be utilised when both Bluetooth and the device’s location are enabled. It’s also important to note that this feature currently does not work with Samsung devices. Google suggests using the auto-hotspot feature as an alternative for Samsung users.
This version is still in beta, so a broader rollout is expected in the near future. Internet Sharing is available for devices running Android 11 and above as well as Google Play services running on version 24.28.34. However, Cross-device services are not available on Android GO devices just to give a heads up.
