Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo previously announced that the government is expecting to complete the selection process for the second 5G network by the end of the year. Before we get there, there are concerns with regards to 5G prices once the country transitions from the current Single Wholesale Network to Dual Wholesale Network. On this front, the minister says that the government, via the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), will ensure that 5G prices will remain the same.
A Bernama report quotes the minister as saying that the “MCMC is concerned about this issue and has taken steps to ensure that the price remains when the second network is established”. He also noted that “the process is still ongoing”, with the price aspect already being taken into account during the evaluation process.
The statement was given following the signing of a cooperation agreement between Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) and CyberSecurity Malaysia (CSM) to improve the country’s 5G network security. This involves the development of security guidelines that will be industry guiding principles, and future security foundations.
Going back to the second 5G network, currently four of the major telcos have completed the share subscription agreement (SSA) for a stake in DNB. These are CalcomDigi, U Mobile, Maxis and YTL, with TM being the holdout. That last one has until 21 August to get shareholder approval for the go ahead.
