During its Unpacked event in Paris last week, TM Roh, President of Samsung, said that the company would launch its Virtual Reality XR headset before the year is out. Now reports have seemingly narrowed down that date to sometime in October this year.
To be clear, Samsung is planning on getting an early version of the headset out by this year, primarily to developers so that they can begin working on app for it, and be ready to fully launch by 2025.
The Samsung XR headset is expected to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset, mainly because of its ability to do spatial computing with internal projections of 4.3k display resolutions per eye. As to whom it is competing with, there’s little imagination there: the brand is obviously going toe-to-toe with Apple’s Vision Pro and Meta’s Quest.
In addition, Samsung is collaborating with Google on software, and Qualcomm for its advanced chip technology.
“Looking forward, we’re collaborating to bring next generation experiences across Galaxy products for smartphones and wearables to even future technologies like the upcoming XR platform we’ve been working closely to develop in partnership with Samsung and Qualcomm”, added by Rick Osterloh, Google’s senior vice president of Platform and Devices.
