As it is right now, whenever a stranger adds you to a group on WhatsApp, the only warning you get from the app is that it was done by an unknown number. The Meta subsidiary aims to change that, with an update that will give you more info about said group.
9to5Mac reports that once the update rolls out to everyone on WhatsApp, group invites by unknown numbers will also come with info detailing who made the group chat, when it was created, and who within said group added you to it. The usual exit group option will still be there, naturally, and if everything looks right to you – say you’ve been notified by a friend that their acquaintance will be doing so – then you can also contribute to the group as before.
The report quotes a Meta spokesperson as saying that “This gives WhatsApp users an additional layer of safety and security, building on other tools” that are currently in place. Probably the most important one of them all is setting whether to allow anyone to add you to groups, or only limit that privilege to people already in your contact list.
Like the many previous features added to WhatsApp, it won’t be immediately available to everyone. But with a parent company spokesperson already providing a statement, it’s safe to say that the rollout of the feature will be underway soon, if not already.
