The wait is over, as Samsung has finally lifted the veil over its next-gen compact foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Flip6. While looking almost similar to its predecessor, the newer device packs plenty of improvements in terms of hardware, along with several new features. And yes, the latter includes those powered by the brand’s Galaxy AI system.
As mentioned earlier, the new compact foldable shares a nearly identical design to last year’s mode, the Galaxy Z Flip5. Differences in this aspect is minor, as the major differing factor (at least, visually) is the coloured rims that surround the phone’s two external cameras on its cover screen. These match the Galaxy Z Flip6’s available colourways, which includes Silver Shadow, Yellow, Blue, Mint, Crafted Black, White and Peach. Keep note that the last three are only available via Samsung’s official website.
Externally, the phone’s cover screen features a 3.4-inch Super AMOLED 60Hz display with 720 x 748 px resolution, 306 PPI, and 60Hz refresh rate. Samsung says it has added more functionality here by introducing the ability to add widgets, and several third-party apps will be supported on the get-go. Much like its predecessor, the company says you’ll need its Good Lock app if you wish to use unsupported ones. Also introduced are new Cover Screen wallpapers which feature elements that can be interacted by touch, and will move about when you shift the phone’s orientation.
Unfolding the Galaxy Z Flip6 will reveal a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with 2460 x 1080 px resolution, 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, and a 10MP selfie camera within a punch-hole cutout. Besides that, also featured are top and bottom stereo speakers, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and a USB-C port for data transfer and charging.
The phone now folds flat thanks to an improved hinge, which also grants it resistance to both water and dust with a rating of IP48. This is a major improvement, especially given the fact that the Galaxy Z Flip5 only featured IPX8 certification.
Under the hood, the Galaxy Z Flip6 is a 5G-enabled Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chipset that’s co-developed by both Samsung and Qualcomm, designed to provide optimised performance as well as support for the former’s Galaxy AI system. Paired with the SoC is a single RAM configuration of 12GB, and a choice of either 256GB or 512GB of internal storage.
Powering the foldable is a larger 4,000mAh battery which supports 25W fast charging via USB-C. Samsung adds that wireless charging and wireless PowerShare are also available, but did not specify the ratings for either. Besides that, the phone runs on Android 14 via One UI 6.1.1, and features Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and NFC connectivity support.
In terms of imaging, the Galaxy Z Flip6 comes with a dual camera setup that’s helmed by a new 50MP primary and a 12MP ultra-wide. One nifty little feature introduced exclusively for the phone is AI Zoom, which lets the camera zoom in or out and adjust framing automatically depending on how far you are. However, this is only available when you’re using the external screen to snap selfies or groupfies. Other than that, the camcorder-like Flex Mode now comes with a zoom slider, which makes it easier for you to close up on subjects when recording videos.
Last but not least, we have the new Galaxy AI features. For the Galaxy Z Flip6, there’s a new mode for Interpreter which utilises both the external and internal screens to display back-and-forth translations during conversations. Meanwhile, Circle to Search now works with videos, Live Translate is now available on popular third-party apps, and a new Portrait Studio feature has been added to the gallery which can generate your selfies into stylised versions such as 3D cartoon, watercolour and others.
The new Galaxy Z Flip6 is slated to be available in Malaysia from 24 July onwards, with pre-orders available now via Samsung Malaysia’s website. The 12GB+256GB configuration of the compact foldable is priced at RM4,999, while the 12GB+512GB is at RM5,599. Additionally, it will also receive seven years of software support (OS and security) from the company.
