Apple announced its partnership with OpenAI to have ChatGPT as a pretty major part of its OS paltforms during the course of its WWDC presentation this year. Around the same time, rumours of the iPhone maker also taking with other companies – Google and Meta – that had their own generative AI models were also making their rounds. For the former of those two companies, recent reports point to a finalised deal being announced as soon as autumn, or between late September and late December.
At least, such is the claim by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman via his weekly Power On newsletter. Not so good news for the latter, as the report claims that Apple has thought that Meta’s Llama chatbot is not up to snuff. Gurman claims that, following the report by the WSJ last week, sources told him “immediately” that it “wasn’t going to happen”. Going further, the claims is that while Apple had spoken to Meta about the deal all the way back in March, but “those early conversations didn’t evolve into formal discussions”. The topic has also not been broached “for several months”.
The newsletter also mentions a third candidate for generative AI integration into Apple’s OS of various platforms, in the form of Anthropic. This is a company that was founded by former OpenAI people, which the bitten fruit brand has deemed as “superior”, at least enough to be considered. Unlike with Google’s Gemini, which currently has the aforementioned autumn announcement window alongside the company’s own Apple Intelligence beta rollout, the deal with Anthropic doesn’t seem to be far ahead enough to have such an unveiling.
Considering the rollout window, all of these announcements will likely coincide with the unveiling of the iPhone 16 line. Whether or not any of this pans out the way it has been reported so far, there’s at least a two-month waiting window before anything gets confirmed.
