When it comes to the market of VR headsets, a coupe of names come to mind, especially the ones with bigger price tags. New entries aiming to be more affordable include the likes of Chinese brand PICO. And now, the Play for Dream MR headset gets added to the list, coming from another company known as Play for Dream.
As the name suggests, this is marketed as a mixed reality headset, doing both AR and VR, even if the term is used loosely these days to allow conventional VR headset users to see their surroundings. That being said, the brand claims that the Play for Dream MR is the “first Android-based spatial computer”. On this front, the headset runs its own Dream OS with a Dream Space launcher, as well as an AI assistant that helps with some generative AI uses, like turning a 2D image into a 3D one.
Going over its spec sheet, the Play for Dream MR comes with a pair of 4K Micro-OLED screens using Pancake optics to take up less space. If you wear prescription glasses, the company claims that the Play for Dream MR also has automatic interpupillary distance adjustment. The brains of the device is the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Plus Gen 2 chipset, running 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM. Storage options come in 512GB and 1TB flavours. Wireless tech support include Bluetooth 5.3 and WiFi 7.
For cameras, the Play for Dream MR comes with quite the number of them, as you’d expect for a headset of this type. The spec sheet mentions 11 cameras with 22 infrared LEDS, with the ones responsible for the pass-through vision being noted to be of the 32MP variety. There are also a wide range of other sensors including six DoF cameras, eye- and gesture-tracking cameras, depth sensors, wear detection cameras, as well as colour passthrough cameras. There’s also what the company claims to be 26DoF hand tracking as well.
The company says that the weight of the headset measures in at 288g, with a 3:2 weight distribution ratio between the front and back portions. Though this is far from the complete picture, as it excludes the battery, head strap and face cover. On the controller front, things will look pretty familiar for those who have dabbled in the VR space. There’s a pair of 6DoF controllers. The company says that the Play for Dream MR will also come with Bluetooth keyboard and mouse support, though via a future update.
Worth noting at this point though that Play for Dream MR is the company’s third product, even if it’s the first that’s making its way to the local market. And with that, the company says that the headset will be available in Malaysia in October of this year, alongside Singapore, where its regional HQ is at. Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Japan will be getting their turn some time in 2025.
All that being said though, the company has not shared what its local pricing will be like for its two storage options. The company did tease its US pricing, indicating that either way, it won’t exactly be affordable. In the meantime, you can head over to the brand’s website, linked here, though the Play for Dream MR itself is not yet listed at the time of writing.
