At risk of sounding like a broken record, the Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset is pricey, which understandably leads to slow sales. With that in mind, it would make sense to also develop a more affordable alternative alongside a sequel, even if said alternative won’t end but being that much more affordable. But more recently, it looks like the bitten fruit company has decided to pause work the sequel to focus entirely on the cheaper alternative.
MacRumors cites The Information noting that Apple has told at least one of its suppliers that it is halting work on developing a Vision Pro 2. Despite now having the whole of the headset team working on the model that’s more within reach, it’s still not going to be coming out anytime soon. The brand had initially wanted to release it at the end of the year, but as of earlier in this year, it did not have even a firm prototype. With that, it may even not make its new release date of end 2025.
As mentioned before, the more affordable version of the Apple headset is only more affordable when compared to the Vision Pro. While there are a fair amount of compromises to achieve the lower price point, like the EyeSight display and downgrading from the M chips to an A entry, it would potentially still sport a price range of between US$1,500 and US$2,500. For context, the Vision pro launched with an asking price of US$3,499.
While work on the Apple Vision Pro 2, or whatever the sequel may end up being called, has been paused, the company has not scrapped it completely. The report notes that work on the next Vision Pro may resume at some point in the future.
