Google’s Circle to Search is a great feature, and probably one of the more useful applications of what is comtemporarily called AI today in the consumer tech industry. Naturally, one would expect this to be better in time, but one of the ways this looks to be happening in the near future is via a new functionality. Specifically, the feature is getting an augment that allows it to perform Audio Search.
Code within a beta of the Google app, specifically version 15.24.28.29, suggests the addition of an Audio Search button being added to Circle to Search. Android Authority has managed to get the button – the one with the musical note as its symbol – to manifest, in between the search bar and the existing Translate button. But while the button is there, it doesn’t actually work yet.
While it’s unclear what use cases this Audio Search will add to Circle to Search, the report mentions the possibility of it doing something similar to Shazam. In other words, you can tap on the button when audio is playing in the background, letting it identify what exactly is being played. This likely will not overlap with the microphone icon on the search bar itself, which will likely remain relegated to handling voice typing for said bar.
Ultimately, it’s unclear what the exact nature of Audio Search is, and it will likely remain so until Google officially announces the feature. Though it it does end up being a Shazam alternative for Circle to Search, it remains to be seen if it will be as reliable, or even better, than the incumbent app.
