TikTok has quietly launched its new photo sharing app, known as Whee, in select countries including Malaysia. It is now available on iOS and Android devices via Apple App Store and Google Play Store, respectively.
While similar in concept to its earlier offering, TikTok Notes, the ByteDance-owned platform’s newer app is more straightforward and somewhat private, favouring a simpler friends-only live feed. For now, it does appear that Whee is still bare bones in terms of features, as it only allows you to snap and share photos without captions, utilise different image filters, leave comments on posts, and chat with other users.
TikTok emphasised that Whee primarily focuses on showcasing photos shared by friends on your feed. Whether or not it will implement its parent platform’s algorithm to push content automatically or even display ads in the future remains to be seen, though it would be unsurprising if this were to be the case.
You’ll need a TikTok account in order to log in, and there’s no option to sign up directly via the app itself. In other words, those who’ve not registered to the parent platform yet are required to head over to its website or app to register a new account.
It should also be noted you’ll be starting from scratch on Whee, and there’s currently no ability to import your list of friends, follows, or followers over from TikTok. However, the app will recommend accounts that you may know or have interacted with on the parent platform to help you with the onboarding process.
