A leak from back in March indicated that the Xbox Series X console will be getting a digital-only edition some time in the middle of the year. It has finally happened, as Microsoft has unveiled the new variant of this console generation. Officially, it is dubbed the Xbox Series X 1TB All-Digital Edition.
As the name suggests, this is a version of the console without the optical drive. It also comes in white, as the aforementioned leak had indicated. Besides that, there’s not much else to say about digital-only version of the Xbox Series X. Microsoft may or may not announce an optional disc drive the way the redesigned PS5 does, but nothing points to that being the direction the company will go down for now.
Probably more exciting that a version without a disc drive is a console with it, and more storage plus a special coat of paint. This comes in the form of the Xbox Series X 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition. Though the extra storage is the real draw here, as the special coat of paint looks to be the familiar black colourway with white dots sprinkled in to simulate stars in space. The company claims that this version of the console “features a silver, grey, and green celestial effect”, but this is probably describing a custom lighting effect rather than the console’s shell.
Last, and definitely least among the announcements, is the Xbox Series S – 1TB in Robot White. To be clear, the first iteration of this more affordable console is indeed white. It later got a 1TB edition, but sporting the black of the Series X instead. This option is for those who want more storage space, but also the original white colour of the slimmer console.
Microsoft says that both of the Xbox Series X models announced here, alongside the Xbox Series S variant, will launch in the holiday season of 2024. For what it’s worth, their US prices have already been revealed – the All-Digital model has a US$449.99 (~RM2,122) price tag, while the Galaxy Black Special Edition will cost US$599.99 (~RM2,830). As for the 1TB Series S in white, this will be priced at US$349.99 (~RM1,651).
Pre-orders, market availability, and regional pricing will be announced at a later date. One can hope that Malaysia will finally be included in the list, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for it. After all, it took half a year for just the controllers to be shipped.
