Proton published a teaser on its social media channels pages during the weekend, promoting an upcoming announcement that’s scheduled for this Wednesday on 12 June 2024 at 6pm on its official Facebook page. Based on the #PROTONEV hashtag included in the promo’s caption, it is expected that the local car brand will finally spill details regarding its first ever electric vehicle (EV) model, as previously promised.
While many are hopeful to catch a first glimpse of the EV, it is quite likely that Proton may only reveal the EV’s name instead. After all, the company had recently concluded its “Decode The Future” contest on 5 June, where it invited the public to guess the vehicle’s “brand name.”
It’s been speculated that the Proton’s inaugural EV may be based on the Geely Galaxy E5, an upcoming model which itself has yet to be officialized. That said, details of the latter are still sparse, though a listing on China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology website notes that the vehicle comes with a 160kW (215hp) electric motor and a LFP battery pack.
On a related note, Proton CEO Li Chunrong in February affirmed the company’s commitment to roll out an EV by 2025 in order to fulfil the ministry of international trade and industry’s (MITI) expectations. He also noted that Proton intends to introduce a second all-electric model between six to eight months after revealing the first.
