If you haven’t heard, X (formerly known as Twitter), recently made a big change to its content policy to allow adult content on the platform. Upon hearing about this, communications minister Fahmi Fadzil stated during a post-Cabinet meeting press conference yesterday that the government will assert its firm stance to uphold the nation’s policies.
The minister said that the policy change clearly violates Malaysian laws and was unacceptable. With this, he believes that Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) COO Mohd Ali will ensure that X and other platforms understand that online gambling, dissemination of pornographic materials, and other prohibited content are not tolerated.
The social network previously ignored users posting NSFW content on its site, with no rules specifically banning or allowing pornographic materials. Last weekend, it added new clauses to its rules that officially sanctions adult content as long as it follows the rules.
Users on X can now post consensually produced NSFW content as long as it is prominently labeled. This rule also applies to AI-generated or animated adult content that contains nudity or explicit sexual behaviour. Justifying the policy change, the company wrote, “We believe in the autonomy of adults to engage with and create content that reflects their own beliefs, desires, and experiences, including those related to sexuality.”
