Older Samsung smartwatches running on Tizen will soon be cut off from official support. This comes after a notification in the Galaxy Store app announced that the South Korean tech giant will soon be ending support for older wearables running on the in-house OS.
This will affect all Galaxy Watch models using Tizen, including the original Galaxy Watch, the Watch3, and the older Watch Active models. The latest Tizen-powered smartwatch is the Galaxy Watch3 released in 2020, which will be five years old by the time the sunset takes place.
According to the timeline provided by the company, users of Tizen-based smartwatches will no longer be able to purchase paid apps starting 30 September this year. After that, users will not be able to download even free apps starting 31 May 2025. Of course, apps that are already installed on your device will keep on running, so it is recommended that you download any apps you might want before the deadlines.
This change was expected given that back in 2021, Samsung and Google announced that Tizen and Wear OS would merge into a unified smartwatch platform, with the Galaxy Watch4 and newer wearables shipping with Wear OS. Tizen will still be around, but is mainly being developed for Samsung’s smart TVs.
