The use of VR or MR, or even both, for work rather than have been around since the first headsets have become available. But what would your reaction be like if I told you that there is one product that takes this to the extreme, removing the play almost entirely out of the equation? That is the Spacetop G1, a laptop without a conventional screen, but instead has a pair of AR glasses tethered to it.
Made by Israeli company Sightful, the Spacetop G1 made an appearance during this year’s CES showcase. The announcement itself was a bit light on details, but Engadget reports that it comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon QCS8550 chipset, 16GB of RAM and 128GB of storage space. In short, it’s probably safe to say that it won’t be doing what the new Snapdragon X laptops can, besides its unique display and the custom OS it runs.
On that note, we get to the unique selling point of the Spacetop G1, the tethered AR glasses. Since all the hardware is stored on the keyboard half of the laptop, the glasses themselves are about as light as the average eyewear. But with it, the company delivers what is claimed to be a 100-inch virtual screen that’s completely for your eyes only. It also comes with a 90Hz refresh rate. Naturally, it comes with its own onboard AI functionality.
On its own site, Sightful is taking reservations of the Spacetop G1 for US$100, with the item itself shipping in October for US$1,900. All that being said, the company has not listed where the laptop can be shipped to.
