The Fujifilm GFX100S II, the brand’s latest 102MP equipped medium format camera has finally launched in Malaysia. And it’s not alone, as also making its official local debut today is the X-T50 model, which was already available for preorder since earlier this month.
The GFX100S II is the successor to Fujifilm’s previous medium format model that was released back in 2021. It features a new GFX 102MP CMOS II large format sensor, which is about 1.7 times larger than a typical 35mm full-frame sensor, and is powered by a high-speed X-Processor 5. This new sensor allows for a standard sensitivity of ISO80 in still mode and ISO100 in video mode, significantly enhancing dynamic range and reducing noise compared to previous models. Additionally, the sensor improves light use efficiency at the edges and offers 20 Film Simulation Modes, further enhancing the camera’s versatility.
One of the standout features of the GFX100S II is the “Pixel Shift Multi-Shot” capability, which enables the creation of a 16-shot RAW file by shifting the image sensor by 0.5 pixels for each shot. This can be combined using the “Pixel Shift Combiner” software to produce an image with an impressive 400 million pixels. The camera also features a “Real Color” mode, capturing four RAW files with a one-pixel shift each, resulting in 102 million-pixel images. This mode effectively reduces false colors in just one-fourth of the time and data volume compared to its predecessor.
Despite its powerful features, the GFX100S II maintains a compact design, weighing approximately 883g, making it the lightest camera in the GFX system. Its dimensions are similar to earlier models in terms of height and depth. The camera’s autofocus system is enhanced with an AI-based subject detection algorithm capable of identifying various subjects, including animals, birds, vehicles, and even drones, performing effectively in low-light conditions down to -5.5EV. The camera also boasts a shooting speed of up to 7 frames per second and incorporates a highly advanced 8-stop five-axis IBIS system to minimise camera shake.
For videographers, the GFX100S II supports 4K DCI/30P 4:2:2 10-bit recording in H264/265 formats on an SD card, with an external SSD option for Apple ProRes recording via USB Type-C. It can also record ProResRaw and BMDRaw to external monitor recorders via HDMI. The camera delivers 13 stops of dynamic range with F-LOG2 (at ISO800) and supports simultaneous monitoring with Film Simulation applied through HDMI. Furthermore, the GFX100S II integrates seamlessly with Frame.io, allowing users to upload photos and videos directly to the cloud, enhancing workflow efficiency.
The new GFX100S II is currently available for pre-order until 16 June 2024, priced at RM26,888 for body only. Fujifilm adds that early birds are also entitled to redeem free gifts worth RM5,235 in total.
As mentioned earlier, the brand today also officially launched its X-T50 model. To recap, the camera features a 40MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR APS-C sensor, similar to the X-T5 and X-H2 models. It includes a 3-inch two-way tilt rear LCD, 7-stop in-body image stabilization, and can shoot continuously at up to 8fps with its mechanical shutter. For video recording, the X-T50 supports 6.2K at 30fps, 4K at 60fps, and 1080p at 240fps, offering formats like Apple ProRes RAW and BDM RAW. The camera uses a single UHS-II SD card for storage.
A new feature in the Fujifilm X-T50 is a dedicated dial for film simulation, a first for the brand. This dial allows users to choose from several presets and assign up to three presets to the dial’s shortcuts, although custom film recipes cannot be set for these shortcuts.
The Fujifilm X-T50 is now available at RM7,998 for body only. Bundling the camera with an XC15-45mm kit lens costs RM8,498, while opting for the XF16-50mm combo instead costs RM9,998.
