id Software and Bethesda Softworks, the developer and publisher that gave us the 2016 reboot of Doom and its sequel, may be announcing a new title under the franchise during the upcoming Xbox showcase. Supposedly, the game is going to be a prequel and could be titled “Doom: The Dark Ages”.
According to Insider Gaming, rumours about a possible Doom prequel began at the start of this year, after Bethesda registered a brand new trademark, IDKFA. For the uninitiated, that’s a well-known cheat code in the entire series.
Leakster Tom Henderson then suggested that Doom: The Dark Ages is expected to be the game’s final name and while official details have yet to reach the tentacles of the internet, it is hinted that the game will be a “medieval-inspired” world, suggesting that id Software is somehow moving away from its traditional Super Shotgun-blasting and one-shot BFG9000 roots. If that were true, hopefully, the developers will still retain the up close and personal rip-and-tear executions that both redefined and re-energised the franchise.
The Xbox Showcase will be happening on 9 June, so hopefully we’ll hear more from the studios then.
