If you need help identifying a song that’s playing in the background, you’d normally use the Shazam phone app. But as many who have tried in vain will tell you that you can’t hum or whistle into it. For that scenario, YouTube Music may be the solution, as it is rolling out a feature that does just that.
The Verge reports that the presence of the feature in the YouTube Music app is the presence of a “new waveform icon next to the microphone icon that appears when you tap the search button”. From here, the report notes that the way to make use of it is similar to using Shazam – tap on the icon, and start humming or whistling, and let the app do its thing.
As for accuracy, the report notes that the YouTube Music tool does identify hummed and whistled tunes to some degree of accuracy. Though as you’d expect, it’s not perfect, and you be the judge as to if the misses are funny.
On another note, I’d be curious as to whether the song database of this YouTube Music feature gets updated frequently. Going back to Shazam for example (now that it’s been Apple property for over half a decade), it often fails to identify songs that are not already in the Apple Music library. This is especially if you’re using it to identify a song for a new show fresh into the season. Repeat the test a month later, when the track has appeared on streaming services, and you get the result you expect.
At any rate, the report notes that this music identifying feature of YouTube Music is now rolling out on Android devices. It has been spotted on iOS in recent months, but the report notes that not everyone has it just yet.
