Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claims to have a lead on several new features that are expected to debut on Apple’s upcoming iOS 18 update. In his latest Power On newsletter, he revealed that amongst these include AI-generated emojis, additional customisation options, and more.
The first of which is perhaps the more standout additions of iOS 18, allowing users to create custom emojis dynamically based on their text, adding a new layer of personalisation and fun to messaging. Gurman adds that Apple plans to showcase this, as well as other upcoming features, during the upcoming WWDC conference next month.
Next up are the enhanced customisation options on iPhone, including the ability to change app icon colours and arrange them more freely on the home screen, moving away from the traditional grid layout. If true, this would represent a significant shift for Apple, offering users more creative control over their device’s appearance – interface-wise, that is.
Another feature that’s suggested to debut on the upcoming update are smart recaps for notifications, web pages and so on, which aims to streamline user experiences with intelligent summaries. This is one of the features to capitalise on Apple’s new AI integration that’s rumoured to be unveiled and significantly highlighted during WWDC 2024.
Speaking of which, Gurman indicates that Apple might officially announce its collaboration with ChatGPT developer OpenAI during the event. He added that rather than launching highly experimental features, Apple is likely to focus on practical AI applications, enhancing existing first-party offerings such as Safari, the built-in photo editor, Siri, and more.
