As the world demand for AI chip grows, it is becoming more imperative for tech giants like Intel, NVIDIA, and Apple to secure a lifeline for the silicon well ahead of their respective competition. In the case of the fruit company, that appears to be exactly what it did when it reportedly met up in secret with TSMC.
According to the Taiwan-based publication, Economic Daily News, Jeff Williams, the COO at Apple, made a discreet visit to the TSMC’s office at the latter’s home country, to meet with its President, C.C. Wei. Supposedly, the meeting was to secure and reserve the initial 2nm production of chips for the Cupertino-based brand.
It’s not the first time Apple has tried to get ahead of the curve and the rest of the tech world. Prior to the alleged 2nm reservation, the company also reached out to TSMC for its entire 3nm capacity, which it then proceeded to use in the design of its A17 Bionic SOC and M3 series silicon, the latter which can be found within the company’s latest Macbook Pro series.
The move that Apple had made this move under the cover of night, then, is believable, and to be fair, it is just business.
As we’ve mentioned, AI PCs and machines are fast becoming a major commodity with today’s modern hardware, with Qualcomm and Microsoft fast becoming major players in the race, the former having developed its ARM-based Snapdragon X Series processors, and the latter aiming its sights squarely on Apple, as it chases the dream of making Windows viable on ARM-based systems.
