The iPhones of today are not particularly chunky, but it looks like Apple may be working on making a thinner variant for next year. It will be released alongside the rest of the iPhone 17 lineup, but it may also be the priciest one of the line.
According to The Information, this “significantly thinner version” of the iPhone “could be priced higher than” the Pro Max model. The report also notes this model to be a significant leap forward in design language, with comparisons drawn to the iPhone X at the time of its launch.
Details about this drastic design change have yet to be confirmed, but a few possibilities have been listed by the report. These include using an aluminium chassis, and upgraded front-facing camera for Face ID in a smaller pill-shaped cutout, and the rear camera setup being moved to the centre. This thinner iPhone will reportedly come with a screen size that’s in between the current base model and Pro Max, despite being pricier than the latter.
Strangely, the report also notes this thinner model as being a potential replacement for the Plus model of 2025. If true, the iPhone 16 Plus may be the last entry of the line. Though it would be strange for the replacement of the Plus model to be priced higher than the Pro Max variant. It’s also a wonder why the Pro and Pro Max models were not the ones to get the slimming treatment the way the recent iPad Pro models did. Either way, some salt is still required.
