For those who remember fondly the days of the PlayStation Portable and Vita, the PlayStation Portal was, to put it mildly, probably not the sequel you were waiting for. That being said, the latest word on the street is that another PS handheld may be on the way. This comes from the rumour mill that is ResetEra, which quotes and translates a claim by Russian journalist Anton Logvinov.
Specifics on the claim include the new PlayStation handheld as capable of playing PS4 titles. In fact, the claim is that the device’s launch line up consosts of “only PS4 games”. The claim also notes that “retail chains, by the way, are quite skeptical. Either Sony is doing something completely [sic], or they are still keeping secrets from their partners”.
Worth noting though is that while the rumour points to the new PlayStation handheld only having PS4 titles for the launch lineup, it’s unclear if current generation games will be playable later down the line. On that note, having a launch lineup of only PS4 titles may be a tough sell, considering many are already available on PC, and therefore on handheld PCs like the Steam Deck and similar devices by other brands.
Of course, the rumour itself looks to have come out of nowhere, but Logvinov is noted to be among the first to break the news that PlayStation would be releasing first-party titles on PC. And despite what detractors of the PS Portal may say, there are enough reports of it running out – and getting restocked – that it may be popular enough to warrant a sequel. At any rate, this one should especially be taken with a pinch of salt.
