New details allegedly about the Nintendo Switch 2 have leaked. Supposedly, the upcoming console could ship out with up to 12GB LPDDR5X RAM.
Much of the rumour was discussed by the British tech outfit, Digital Foundry (DF). In addition to the suggestion of a Switch 2 running with 12GB LPDDR5X RAM, the source quoted by DF also implied that the memory modules would comprise two 6GB sticks, running at a speed of 7500MT/s. The speed makes sense for an SoC, given that the performance of a chipset’s integrated graphics depends heavily on the frequency and quantity of RAM that is paired with it.
As a quantitative number, 12GB LPDDR5X RAM is more than what the Xbox Series S has, which is 10GB RAM. Additionally, the source says that the the Switch 2 will also come with 256GB of internal storage, which again is more than the current Switch’s maximum internal storage capacity of 64GB. On that note, it is still unclear if the storage medium is going to be eMMC or NVMe but at this stage, it would make more sense for Nintendo to adopt the latter as the standard.
On another related note, there’s still no telling what the next chipset to power the Switch 2 is going to be, only that it will continue to be one forged from the halls of NVIDIA’s GPU labs. We’ll just have to wait until March 2025 to find out.
