Back in October of 2020, we saw the launch of the LG Signature OLED R Rollable TV which came with the astronomical price tag of KRW100 million (~RM345,173). After a short-ish half-decade run, there are now reports that the company has discontinued production of the model, and has already repurposed manufacturing lines into making other TVs.
According to the English side of the South Korean news site The Chosun Daily, the company stopped the sale of the LG Signature OLED R Rollable TV in various markets since the end of 2023. The company even went as far as pulling unsold units from stores that had them. Strangely enough, while the model saw middling sales in general, units that did manage to get sold were “mostly confined to art exhibitions”, in addition to the expected premium market segment.
The report noted that the high price of the LG Signature OLED R Rollable TV, which only comes in one size of 65 inches, mean that it was targeted at “VVIP customers”. That being the case, most customers within this segment already had TVs sized at or over 70 inches, and the rollable gimmick wasn’t worth downsizing their existing TVs.
Ultimately, it’s no real surprise. The form factor of the LG Signature OLED R Rollable TV will probably only make sense for those looking for a large TV that takes up minimum space, and those who can afford it can probably also afford the space. And comparing its converted price, anyone who could afford the TV would probably prefer to use that money to buy property.
