Ever wanted to swiftly share files between two PCs without needing to hop on the same WiFi or Ethernet network, or using an external drive? Well, Intel has a solution for that, and it’s called Thunderbolt Share. Unlike the two methods mentioned earlier, this newly introduced software not only allows file sharing through a Thunderbolt-compatible cable connection, but also seamless screen sharing.
As the company puts it, Thunderbolt Share utilises a wired connection to harness the speed, low latency, and security features of Thunderbolt technology. It enables PC-to-PC connectivity, allowing users to share screens, keyboards, mice, and storage, as well as synchronise folders or drag-and-drop files seamlessly between computers. Additionally, the new software will be compatible with Thunderbolt 4 or 5 PCs, docks, and monitors.
“Now users can seamlessly access one PC from another at Thunderbolt technology speeds,” Intel vice president and general manager of client connectivity Jason Ziller said in a statement. “It truly changes how users can be more productive and efficient.”
As mentioned earlier, Thunderbolt Share also supports uncompressed screen sharing between PCs, maintaining the source computer’s original resolution with low latency. According to Intel, the software ensures a smooth and responsive experience with full HD mirroring at up to 60 frames per second. The same can’t be said when using higher resolutions, however, as this may affect the frame rate.
Intel assures that Thunderbolt Share maintains robust security and privacy standards, incorporating its VT-d-based data protection and honouring Windows User Access Control. Initially available for Windows PCs, the company plans to potentially expand the feature to other operating systems. On that note, Thunderbolt Share is expected to be available in select PCs and accessories in the latter half of 2024, with upcoming support from major brands such as Acer, Belkin, and Lenovo.
