Rumours have it that NVIDIA is now engaged in a new partnership with Mediatek to develop and design an ARM-based AI processor for PCs. However, it doesn’t appear that the chip will be for Nintendo, because of how miffed the GPU maker’s CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang, is at the gaming brand.
Huang is allegedly “frustrated” at Nintendo, with said frustration supposedly surrounding the gaming company’s unreleased Nintendo Switch 2. More specifically, Huang’s frustration supposedly seems to stem from NVIDIA isn’t a major player in the gaming handheld market, and understandably so.
Yep and Mediatek is also working on gaming handled SoC with Nvidia GPU as Jensen is frustrated by Nintendo and he sees a good market potential.
PS: its different than the new NV semi-custom div that tries to reenter the console market (some CN clients are already interested) https://t.co/sBuYVLJILc— AGF (@XpeaGPU) May 15, 2024
As GamesRadar puts it, it’s easy to see why NVIDIA and Huang would allegedly be annoyed. It’s biggest rival, AMD, has dominated the market with its own chipset – the Steam Deck uses a custom RDNA2 chipset, while consoles like the ASUS ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go are both powered by the more powerful Ryzen Z1 Extreme.
By comparison, NVIDIA’s and most recent gaming handheld is the Nintendo Switch. Granted, it is one of the best-selling consoles to date, but the device is already getting on in age, and the Tegra X1 chipset inside it is even older. It’s an issue that we covered and now, this rumour seems to really seems to have solidified our case about the GPU brand’s presence, or lack thereof, in the market.
At the moment, there’s no additional information about the alleged ARM-based AI processor NVIDIA and Mediatek are working on, other than that the design should be finalised within the 3rd quarter of this year, and that it would cost as much as US$300 (~RM1,404).
