Earlier during this year’s Google I/O keynote, the search engine announced, among other things, that it is integrating is AI chatbot, Gemini, directly into the Android OS. The function and feature will be accessible to users with Android 15, when it launches later in June.
Like with most AI integrations, Google wants Gemini to interact with the rest of the Android apps, but on a much deeper level than just a simple overlay. Simply put, the search engine wants its AI chatbot to be able to interact with other apps in a more comprehensive way through text, voice, or the phone’s camera.
One example Google gave is by asking Gemini to drop generated images into Gmail and Messages, while another example showed them using a feature called “Ask This Video”, posing a question to the chatbot about a YouTube video.
Google also talked about the Circle to Search function that will be part of Gemini. If you’re using a Samsung Galaxy S23 or S24 device, then you’ll already know how this function works but again, the big news here is that it’ll be widely available through Android 15, meaning that virtually all Android devices should and will be able to gain access to it.
Another nifty feature that Google said it would add to Gemini’s tool belt was the ability for the AI Chatbot to listen in on phone calls and determine through the context of the conversation if you’re being scammed in real-time. Another more interesting demonstration with Gemini was how it could technically help with homework, although that’s unlikely to fly here.
