Dell has put out a warning to its customers, informing them that it has suffered a serious data breach. It claims that hackers have made of with the personal details of approximately 49 million customers.
“We are currently investigating an incident involving a Dell portal, which contains a database with limited types of customer information related to purchases from Dell,” reads a Dell data breach notification. However, the computer brand believes that there isn’t a significant risk to the its customer base, given the sensitivity and nature of information the threat actors made off with.
Dell specifically states that the stolen data did not contain any financial or payment information, email addresses, or telephone numbers, and that it is currently working with law enforcement and 3rd party forensics in the US to determine how exactly the hackers managed to breach its cybersecurity infrastructure.
At the same time and as reported by the Daily Dark Web, an individual by the name of Menelik attempted to sell the alleged data on the Breach Forums on 28 April. They said that the data stolen amounted to “49 million customers and other information systems purchased from Dell between 2017 and 2024.” Matching the information listed in the data breach notifications.
At the time of writing, the post has long been deleted, meaning either someone has already purchased the compromised Dell data, or the sale just never went through due to lack of interest.
