Gigabyte may have confirmed the designation of AMD’s next-generation Ryzen desktop CPUs. The processor will officially be known as the Ryzen 9000 Series, bypassing and leaving the 8000 designation to the laptop series.
“GIGABYTE TECHNOLOGY Co. Ltd, a leading manufacturer of motherboards, graphics cards, and hardware solutions, released the latest AGESA 1.1.7.0 beta bios for the coming AMD Ryzen 9000 series processors boot-up support on GIGABYTE AM5 X670, B650, A620 motherboards, and for present Ryzen 7000 and 8000 series processors as well.”
AMD’s Ryzen 9000 Series, codenamed “Granite Ridge”, is set to be powered by the red chipmaker’s Zen5 architecture, but will still use the current AM5 chipset. For that matter, all current AM5 motherboards will be compatible with the upcoming CPUs.
Of course, this does cause a little bit of confusion. Later in June, AMD is expected to announce Strix Point, but it should be pointed out that that chipset refers to the next-generation Ryzen Mobile CPU series, and not the desktop. That being said, and given how Gigabyte has seemingly let the cat out of the bag, we could see the Ryzen 9000 Series also being announced at Computex this year.
On a related note, this isn’t the first time Gigabyte has goofed with its announcements. One example would be last year, when the brand threw subtlety out the window after outing the existence of the RTX 4070 and 4060.
