Last week, Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, claimed in a paywalled post on X, previously Twitter, that the 12.9-inch iPad Air will be using mini-LED displays. These were supposedly leftovers from the larger iPad Pro models, as some of them will be making use of OLED display tech instead. More recently, Young has backtracked on the claim, stating that the larger iPad Air will be using LCD screens after all.
MacRumors cites the new paywalled post which says that the mini-LED iPad Air is not happening “due to the panel’s high cost”. As a result, the choice between the two sizes now boils down to just that, and your personal preference for either.
On one hand, the mini-LED displays were noted previously to be leftovers, so choosing to not use them seems odd. Though Apple may have decided that the display upgrade would also mean an increase in price, which the company may not be in favour of. On the flip side, it keeps the already blurred line between the iPad Air and iPad Pro from being blurred further.
So what about all the supposed leftover 12.9-inch mini-LED screens that are not being used then? On this, Young claims that there may be another iPad model that uses a 1.29-ionch mini-LED screen scheduled for release within Q4 of the year. Which is a bit too far ahead compared to the upcoming Let Loose event on 7 May.
