Update (19 April 11:03AM): The same image minus the watermark has been posted on Sony’s Japanese website. There’s also a map to a location in Shinagawa, Tokyo, suggesting it will be a physical launch event at the company’s home market. This also explains the lack of a scheduled stream on YouTube.
ORIGINAL STORY (18 April 11:20AM):
There have been a few leaks regarding the Sony Xperia 1 VI in recent times, ranging from the potentially controversial to an oddly specific one. A launch event would obviously clear all of this up, and the possible good news is that a date for that has been decided upon.
An image which looks like a launch event for the Sony Xperia 1 VI has appeared on Chinese social media Weibo. The graphic does not mention a specific model, but it’s safe to assume it’s the flagship model as it has always been the first to launch since the brand’s revamp. Mentioned in the graphic is a date of 17 May, which is around the time the company announces its new phones anyway.
On one hand, the image does look like something that Sony would use, minus the leakster zackbucks’ own watermark. But on the other, the company has thus far scheduled launch streams on its official YouTube channel ahead of time, and that hasn’t happened yet for the Sony Xperia 1 VI, at least at the time of writing. Of course, there’s still about an entire month until the supposed launch, and if a stream gets scheduled between now and then, it would confirm this leak.
The launch of the Sony Xperia 1 VI would put to rest not only the rumours about its screen resolution and aspect ratio mentioned above, but also its cameras. Earlier in the year, word on the street was that the phone would be revealed during MWC with three 48MP shooters at the back, but that didn’t happen. More recent rumours point to it having the same camera setup as the current flagship, meaning a 48MP + 12MP + 12MP combo, with software being the only upgrade, if any.
