The recent volcanic eruptions from Indonesia’s Mount Ruang has led to several Malaysian airlines cancelling routes involving the region. Due to the ongoing nature of the eruptions, it is unclear when the impacted flights will be able to proceed normally again.
Malaysia Airlines has announced on social media that it is cancelling several flights to and from Sabah and Sarawak on 18 April 2024. The airline added that flight cancellations will be directly communicated to affected customers and that it is working on accommodating said passengers on alternative flights once the situation improves.
Similarly, AirAsia has announced the cancellation of all its flights to and from Tawau and Kota Kinabalu on 18 April, but it seems its Sarawak routes are unaffected for now. The budget carrier is offering impacted customers to options in light of this situation, which is to either opt for a new travel date on the same route within 30 days with no additional cost or receive a refund in the form of credit that can be redeemed within two years.
As of writing, neither Batik Air nor Firefly have declared flight cancellations for its East Malaysia routes. We will provide updates once more information comes in.
