There have been a couple of rumours already regarding the PS5 Pro, including a claim that it will be unveiled by the year end holidays of 2024. It seems pretty likely, considering the release schedule of the PS4 and its own Pro version. Now, a new report which claims that devs can get test kits for the new mid-generation console from PlayStation corroborates the claim, assuming plans don’t change by then.
The Verge reports that PlayStation “is expecting every game submitted to certification in August to be compatible with the PS5 Pro”. With the existing redesigned model, colloquially dubbed the Slim, remaining the market until the end of the console generation, the company expects games to come in a single package that supports both it and the upcoming Pro model. As for existing games, the report notes that these can be patched for higher performance.
As previously reported, this higher performance will be given a label dubbed PS5 Pro Enhanced, or Trinity Enhanced internally. For now, it’s unclear which name PlayStation will ultimately use in its official marketing material. But either way, this label means that more graphical fidelity can be extracted from the game by the more powerful console. There are a few distinct improvement criteria for the label, which include a higher target resolution, framerate, and ray-tracing.
Which is all well and good, but it remains to be seen if the PS5 Pro would really signal an end to having to choose between ray-tracing and framerate. Of course, PlayStation will also need more exclusives to convince people to pick up the new console if they’ve held out from picking up the base or Slim PS5 for so long.
