Android 15 is expected to be released later this year, and some features that may be making an appearance have already started dropping hints for those who know where to find them. Among them are the folks over at Android Authority, who have dug into the Developer Preview 2 of the upcoming mobile OS, and found two pretty interesting features.
The first, and probably the more commonly used of the two, is dubbed “adaptive timeout”. It essentially works as the exact opposite of the existing “screen attention” feature, which prevents your screen from turning off if you are looking at it, ignoring the timeout timer you’ve manually set, or the default 30 seconds.
With “adaptive timeout”, if your phone determines that you’re no longer looking at the screen, it will turn it off ahead of the set timeout timer. While it’s still unclear what Android 15 will be using to make that decision, chances are it will be the front-facing camera, much like “screen attention”.
The second feature noted to be added via Android 15 is giving users the choice to automatically turn Bluetooth back on after turning it off. When turning off Bluetooth from the quick settings menu (by swiping down from your home screen), you’ll get prompted with the option to let it “automatically turn on again tomorrow”. This will likely be similar to the prompt you get when you turn off a recurring alarm on Android devices.
On one hand, the reason you may want to turn Bluetooth back on automatically is the Find My Device network. This is essentially the Android counterpart to Apple’s Find My network. It works in a similar way too, relying on Bluetooth to not only find your lost device, but also help others find theirs. But on the flip side, you can actually already make use of this feature by turning on the Bluetooth scanning feature from the Location services setting.
With all that being said, of these two features that Android 15 will be adding, the former is probably the more useful one. One of the primary benefits of your screen turning off automatically when you’re not looking at it is better battery life. And we can all use a lot more of it.
