The ministry of international trade and industry (MITI) previously claimed that the two national carmakers can produce the country’s first electric vehicle by 2025. The CEO of Proton said last month that the company is set to launch its own “very soon”. And according to MITI minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Perodua will be able to produce one by the end of next year.
This was announced via the minister’s account on X, previously Twitter, after having met with senior Perodua execs, including president and CEO Zainal Abidin Ahmad. The meeting was described as one to find out more about the company’s EV development process, and what the government can do to help.
Notably though, this Perodua EV is described as one that is affordable, a label that likely applies to the Proton EV as well. As one that’s being assembled locally, These will likely be the first in the country to be priced under RM100,000, as the rule only applies to imported EVs, with the rule itself only remaining in effect until 2025.
For now though, not much is known about what the former’s EV project, if any at all. The only hint of this is the scale model of the Electric Motion Online concept which was revealed in May of last year, which looks a bit like a MyVi if you squint hard enough.
