A meeting on the dual 5G network model is expected to be held next week, according to communications minister Fahmi Fadzil. He revealed this to reporters during the launch of the BlackBerry Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence (CCOE) in Cyberjaya yesterday, which was also attended by prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“We need to convene the meeting first and appraise the current situation,” the comms minister said. “We expect to have the meeting within the next week.”
Fahmi added that he, along with representatives from the finance ministry and digital ministry would discuss the dual 5G network. He also clarified that the digital minister oversees the day-to-day aspects of running Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), while his ministry focuses on the overall landscape related to spectrum and infrastructure.
The comms minister had previously announced that the 5G network coverage in Malaysia had achieved 80.2% in populated areas as of 10 January 2024, slightly exceeding the target set by the prime minister during the revised 2023 Budget in February last year. On that note, the government initially planned to adopt a dual 5G network model once DNB achieves its goal of hitting 80% 5G coverage in the country, though the move has been delayed.
