A leakster has claimed that the base model iPhone 16 may be getting more RAM and / or storage for its on-device AI features. Similarly, the Pro models may be getting a bumped up chip for the same features. An analyst note mentioned that the iPhone 16 Pro will be armed with, fittingly, an A18 Pro chip.
9to5Mac cites said note, by Jeff Pu of Haitong International Tech Research, which claims that the A18 Pro is a “6-GPU version”, and will feature a larger die area compared to the A17 Pro. This is stated to be “a trend for edge AI computing”.
Edge AI, according to the report, stands for AI features that are processed on-board rather than in the cloud. Also noted in the report is the term coming from the phrase “AI on the edge”, which is quite the description when phrases like on-board or on-device AI are already commonly used. But at any rate, the description is noted to come from IBM.
Interestingly, the report also notes that the base model iPhone 16 will be getting an A18 chipset variant of its own. Which is quite unlike the current trend, which sees Apple giving the new chips to the Pro models while the base variants use older generation hardware. As for their RAM and storage, the the iPhone 15 Pro already has 8GB of RAM, but also starts with 128GB of storage. It remains to be seen if it too will be getting a storage bump as rumoured about the base models.
